2019 has been a historic year in the LGBTQ history in Asia. This year, Taiwan has passed the first marriage equality act. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the first Pride march in Asia, which took place in Manila as a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. This is also the year the Filipino LGBT Europe will be participating for the first time in the annual Amsterdam Pride Parade on August 3.

But before the celebration during the Pride, let us take the time to reflect and stand in solidarity with our Asian colleagues during the panel discussion entitled: LGBTQ Rights & Development in Asia: Then & Now on 30 July 2019 from 19:30 to 21:30 to be held at Voldel CS.

“As a collaboration with Amnesty International, CinemAsia would like to take this opportunity to reflect in the histories of Pride in Asian, as well as relating to our communities in Amsterdam. The discussion will be focused on Asia, as well as the multiple Asian diasporic communities around Europe and our different cultural struggles with our identities,” Darunee Terdtoontaveedej, LGBTQ Programme Curator, said.

The Filipino LGBT Europe is proud to announce that we are invited as one of the panelists in the said event. This conversation will also be joined by Stijn DeClerck of Amnesty International Nederland and film director He Xiaopei.

“We can share how we break walls in spite of the hurdles we faced. We have a rich history (25 years+) of our struggles: from organizing the first Pride march in Asia to being inspiration to our fellow LGBTs in the ASEAN region. As Filipino LGBT in Europe we can share our intersecting experience as LGBTs coming from a conservative/ religious country as well as our experiences as migrant workers, marriage migrants, highly skilled migrants, undocumented migrants or even being a refugee. These experiences can help in organizing to include the specific experiences of LGBTs in a community in diaspora,” Marlon Lacsamana, Marriage Equality Committee Head of the Filipino LGBT Europe said.
