Ayuda sa Amsterdam Heroes: Walter

“The home for the golden gays has a special place in my heart. I have been there and have met them together with my friends from The Library foundation in Manila and being able to hold a special fundraising Zumba class for the Golden Gays was such a fulfilling activity. Knowing that I was able to help one of the marginalized group during this pandemic in my own small way was very rewarding as well.”  – Walter Llabajo

Walter is an experienced Filipino folk dancer, particularly when he was in college. He became a part of the UP Filipiniana Dance Company. During that time, there was no UP PEP Squad. They were able to perform during the UAAP 1992 half time show at the Araneta Coliseum. His background in folk dancing and event management opened a lot of doors for him. One of which being able to choreograph and stage manage fashion shows and beauty pageants for renowned Filipino fashion designer Renee Salud.

What is your name and where do you live?

I am Walter Llabajo. I live in Den Haag, The Netherlands

How long have you been living in Europe?

I have been living in Europe since 2012, about 9 years now.

Where in the Philippine are you or your family from?

I grew up in Tondo, Manila. My parents are also from the same area.

Why did you decide to move or stay in Europe?

To join my Filipino partner who, during that time, was doing a project in Denmark.

Please share what made you volunteer.

Being able to hold a special fundraising Zumba class for the Golden Gays in such a fulfilling activity.  Knowing that I can help, in mu own small way, one of the marginalised groups during this time of the pandemic is very rewarding as well.

Do you have a motto in life?

“whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do unti me” I have encountered this during the time when my partner was in the hospital and I was the one taking care of him. I realized that servind others can be my way of serving God as well.

What do you want to achieve in the program?

Basically, to be able to help in my own small way, is my goal in the program.

Ayuda sa Amsterdam Heroes is a feature mini series to highlight the spirit of volunteerism and camaraderie during covid-19 pandemic. May their stories spark bravery and heroism to all of us and may it serve as a beacon of hope to those who needs help.
