Screening of film LINGUA FRANCA and Panel on the Rise of Anti-Asian Hate
Special intro by Isabel Sandoval (Lingua Franca director, actor and activist)
Film synopsis : Lingua Franca is a 2019 drama film written and directed by trans director/actor Isabel Sandoval. The plot follows an undocumented Filipina trans woman who works as a caregiver for Olga, an elderly Russian woman in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach. When Olivia runs out of options to attain legal status in the US, she becomes romantically involved with Alex, Olga’s adult grandson, in the pursuit of a marriage-based green card. Lingua Franca premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and has won numerous awards and launched Isabel Sandoval’s career as one of the most sought after filmmakers of the moment.

Topic: Discussing the film LINGUA FRANCA and the rise of post COVID Anti Asian Hate incidents and violence. Bringing Asian BIPOC organizations together to speak up against the increase of racism and discrimination against Asians of all genders, ethnicities and sexualities and how Asians have been historically viewed as Labor migrants and model minorities who don’t speak up when faced with injustice.
